I met James and Ben for the first time last Aug 2, 2013. They are the boyfriends of my wife’s nieces from Australia. During their visit to here in Iloilo, I got the chance to talk with these two great guys. We talked about culture, practices, families, hobbies and life. I got to play chess with James and to chat with Ben about his music.
It was a great time to build relationships with these men, who soon we will even be considering family.
While with them I was reminded of the scripture in Mark 12:28 when one of the teachers of the law asked Jesus which is the most important commandment?
From this scripture, I’d like to share three great points with you about How God views relationships:
1. God is THE Expert in relationships
In verse 29, Jesus said, “Hear o Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one-”. Here, Jesus was pointing out the most perfect relationship- The Trinity. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three but they are one. What a wonderful relationship! In growing with our relationship with God and with others, this remains to be the greatest example of all.
2. We DELIBERATELY build relationship with God
Jesus continues in verse 30, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” – It’s clear that we need God and we need to consciously and deliberately seek to grow in our relationship with God. Yes, He is after all the Master of relationship-building, but it goes both ways. God is doing His best to reach out to us; no less must be expected of us.
3. We build relationships with others- DISCIPLESHIP!
In verse 30, Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment greater than these.” This great commandment is what we exist to do- to make disciples. When we build relationship with others, we reflect God’s love to them.
The time I spent with James and Ben, I saw to be more than a time for bonding and friendship. I saw it as an opportunity to reflect God’s love to them. To build relationship with others, the way God builds relationship with us.
Nothing is more valuable to God than building relationships with us. Not even His one and only Son, whom He sacrificed just so that we could be with Him. We need to value what God values- TO LOVE GOD, AND LOVE PEOPLE.
