Who’s responsible to submit to the Government? Romans 13 teaches us that everyone must be subject to governing authorities, all the more if you’re a Christian because you are expected to do so. That is authentic behavior.
Some people believe and would have us believe that demonstrating and rebelling against the government is the best if not the right thing to do. That to submit is not the right way to go. But there are three reasons why Paul refuted that and explains why we need to submit to governing authorities:
First and foremost, God ordained our leaders.
He was the one who placed them there for a His very own purpose and that includes the just and the corrupt.
Daniel 2:21 tells us that God sets up kings and deposes them. Even King Solomon concedes that the Lord directs the heart of kings like a watercourse wherever He pleases. Our response is to submit because there is no authority except from God and those that exist have been instituted by Him.
Secondly, We submit because our leaders are agents of justice.
They are God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer and commend those who do right. In spite of this, some leaders are good and rewards the right, others do otherwise, and others do a little of both.
For this reason the demand for submission becomes relative, not absolute if means disobedience to God. We will obey God rather than men, as Peter admonishes us in Acts 5:39. Our response is to do what is right because we honor God above the Government. Like Daniel and his three friend when faced with obedience to the law that contradicts their faith, they stood up and did what is right in the eyes of God. Compromise should never be our default.
Lastly, like us pastors, our leaders are ministers of God and we owe them honor and respect.
No matter what, worthy or unworthy because that’s what the Bible says. We owe them not only with honor and respect but our taxes as well. Taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed. Paying our revenues and taxes honors God.
We must respond in these three ways, submit, do the right thing, and honor and respect. To submit and honor to God means to submit and honor to Government. That’s Authentic Christian Living.
